Yemen's Houthi rebels' attacks are hampering cargo traffic on the important Suez Canal

Rebels have targeted more attacks on commercial shipping. Among the largest container shipping companies, MSC, Maersk, CMA-CGM and Hapag-Lloyd have announced that for safety reasons they cannot operate through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal for the time being.

Several shipping companies have announced that cargo ships will now travel the route between Europe and Asia via the Cape of Good Hope, the southern tip of Africa. This arrangement extends the transport times by about a week and will naturally also affect capacity and costs.
