EU customs reform is progressing - what does the change mean for companies?

The EU's largest customs reform in decades will bring significant changes to companies' import, export and customs clearance processes. The aim of the reform is to speed up the flow of goods, simplify customs procedures and improve the transparency of supply chains throughout the EU.

At the end of March, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union decided to establish the EU Customs Authority and the EU Customs Data Centre.

This is the largest customs reform since the establishment of the EU Customs Union in 1968, and its aim is to speed up customs processes, increase transparency and improve risk management in international trade by 2034.

EU Customs Data Centre changes customs data processing

A key change for businesses is the introduction of the new EU Common Customs Data Centre. In the future, companies will submit their customs data to one central system instead of the current member country-specific systems.

The aim is to reduce duplicate administrative work, streamline the flow of information and speed up customs processing throughout the EU. For companies, this can mean smoother processes and more efficient supply chain management in the long run.

The decisions reform the common customs legislation of EU countries. The new Customs Code aims to enter into force no later than September of this year, and the current system will be replaced in stages so that the new Customs Code will be fully in use by March 1, 2034.

New EU customs authority strengthens controls and risk management

The EU customs authority to be established will harmonise the customs operations of the member states and strengthen customs control and risk management throughout the EU.

The reform also includes a new Trust and Check Trader model, which allows trusted companies to benefit from simplified customs procedures and smoother freight transport.

What does the customs reform mean for import and export companies?

For companies, the reform means a growing need to ensure the accuracy of customs classifications, product information and delivery documents. The quality of data will play an increasingly important role in the smoothness of customs clearance and the efficiency of supply chains.

Carefully prepared information can reduce delays, reduce additional costs, and improve delivery reliability in international trade.
